James E. Rothman is one of three co-winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He’s in all the news right now and maybe you’ve heard him mentioned. Here are 10 things you might not know about him:

#1. James has his 63 birthday coming up soon!

He was born on November 3, 1950 in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

#2. He’s already won a prize with Dr. Schekman

     He won the Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research in 2002, with Randy Schekman.

#3. Rothman is a Harvard man!

Rothman received his PhD at Harvard, in biological chemistry.

#4. He was a professor at Stanford 

From 1978 to1988 he was a professor of bio-chemistry at Stanford.

 

#5. He’s won a really lot of honors!

    Since 1970, he has won over 26 honors.

#6. He knows all about teeny tiny things.

He is the Director of Nanobiology Institute at Yale.

#7.  He did his training with a real genius!

He did his postdoctorial training with Harvey Lodish at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

#8. His day job isn’t bad at all.

      He is currently Professor and Chairman in the Department of Cell Biology at Yale University.

#9. When he found out he was one of the winners he said:

“I’m overwhelmed, it’s still a little hard to believe this is all happening I have to admit.”

 

 

#10. His wife is brilliant too!

         He is married to Joy Hirsch, professor of Psychiatry and Neurobiology at Yale School of Medicine.
