Born Leon G. Cooperman on April 25, 1943; to a plumber father from the Bronx, Cooperman went to public schools, Hunter College and then got an MBA from Columbia University.

He built up Goldman Sachs’ asset management division, GSAM, in his quarter century with the investment bank. Cooperman founded Omega Advisors in 1991, a hedge fund known for strong performance; he shut down the fund at the end of 2018.
